I have now rebased the patch on top of master to make it easy to apply,
please find it attached.
Of course, the silence I got on the initial patch might mean that folks
are not happy about the change in general, that it should not be done
this way, or that I'm trying to do it in a wrong place or wrong repo.
Any guidance on that front would also be appreciated.
